We would like to give a big shout out and heartfelt THANK YOU to DonorsChoose.org, Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, and David and Angela Filo for funding our 5 Turner High School projects–overnight! Yes, overnight. We found out yesterday, March 10, that the remaining balance for each of our projects was “Flash Funded” thanks to David and Angela Filo. David Filo is the co-founder of Yahoo. Kauffman Foundation had incredibly donated 50% through a matching offer to our projects!
We were sporting big smiles today as we dreamed of the big unveiling to kids that will happen after spring break. New opportunities and experiences in health, creativity, and class-design are coming for kids. Turner USD 202 is a small but mighty district in Kansas City, KS with high poverty but AMAZING kids and teachers. We are focused on empowering teacher leaders so we can empower student leaders. We believe in sharing the good with our community and world through storytelling in blogposts like this one.
The Good News!
1. THS students will have furniture choices in Ms. Slobodzian’s room that allow for movement/choice.
2. THS students will have FOUR StandUp Paddleboards to use in the pool as another choice in fitness and wellness thanks to project proposals from Mr. Garner, Ms Hendrix, and Mr. Parks. Coach Garner will use these for differentiated instruction in the pool. He is also planning yoga instruction on the SUPs in the pool! (a project page)
3. THS students will be able to use a GoPro in the Health/PE department for studying sports or creating videos to support and encourage healthy activities.
